Overview

The Senior Accountant supports full-cycle accounting and finance duties primarily Payroll and General Ledger as well as additional support elements. This position works closely with the Accounting Manager and the VP of Human Resources to facilitate a smooth payroll process and contribute to the overall success of the accounting department. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to work independently and with a team in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.  This position requires broad conceptual judgment, initiative, customer service, and the ability to deal with confidential accounting issues. We are seeking candidates local to our headquarters in Reston, Virginia and is a hybrid work position.

 

 

Responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Processes semi-monthly payroll to ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll transactions including salaries, benefits, garnishment, taxes and other deductions.
  • Reviews, reconciles, and prepares payroll related transactions and journal entries.  
  • Understands nuances of multi-state payroll.
  • Liaises with human resources to track all payroll updates and ensure accuracy in semi-monthly payroll.
  • Maintains files and documentation thoroughly and accurately, in accordance with company policy and accepted accounting practices for government contractors.
  • Researches and resolves payroll discrepancies and questions.
  • Identifies and recommends refinements to payroll processing software, systems, and procedures.
  • Conducts payroll floor audits.
  • Provides payroll related training and education to employees.
  • Serves as timekeeping administrator for Unanet, ensuring accurate set-up of permissions, and monitoring and ensuring timeliness and accuracy of submissions.
  • Assist with cash receipts and bank reconciliation.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for company travel business arrangements.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field with an emphasis in accounting.
  • Minimum of 5 years directly related in payroll management, accounting experience; at least 4 years in a government contracting environment.
  • Strong understanding payroll laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting practices including US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Government contract accounting experience with an understanding of Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and FAR/DFAR.
  • Strong problem-solving and organization skills coupled with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to interact across all levels of the organization in a professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain an excellent level of customer service and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with desktop computing platforms and applications (MS Word, PowerPoint, AND Excel).
  • Familiarity of database file download/upload protocols required.
  • Knowledge of Unanet Financials and Paylocity Payroll a plus.

Clearance Requirements:

  • Due to the nature of this position, U.S. Citizenship and completion of a background check are required.
